There's a sequel already, set in Georgia this time, and another one upcoming set in New York. After that I assume there will be 47 more of these movies, one for each state. Interesting and bit scary. Scarier with the lights out.
One of those based on a true story that you have doubts in believing. The Campbell family is forced to move closer to teenage Matt's Kyle Gallner cancer treatments.
Dad Martin Donovan temporarily stays behind to tend to business as Sara Campbell Virginia Madsen finds what seems to be the perfect house to rent. Two story home is in a quiet wooded area. Plenty of room. Needs a little fixing up. But it doesn't take long to discover the charming Victorian structure has a very disturbing history.
It was once a funeral parlor where dastardly acts against humanity transpired. A demonic messenger appears to Matt and seems to be looking for a spiritual escape to the beyond. Communications with the dead can only unleash bizarre terror. The use of special effects are used sparingly until near the end of the movie. And talk about effective.
There is more than one way to put out a light. And this old house uses a different type of insulation. Doesn't quite live up to the hype, but still worth watching. Supposedly grounded in truth, The Haunting in Connecticut is a decent little spooker, yet still a pic that has all the pitfalls of other notable films of its ilk.
Plot for what it's worth has a family move into a new home, only to find that it has ghosts and ghoulies residing within. But why? There's good strength in the family dynamic at work here, the eldest son has cancer and is undergoing treatment. Thus he becomes the conduit for the strange happenings, and this as his parents fight impending grief and personal worries. The scares toddle along effectively, atmosphere via camera work and sound effects is perfectly efficient, and the story has enough mystery about it to carry you through to the end.
Unfortunately there's a lot of daft stuff as well, I mean who in their right mind would sleep in a basement room and not force open an adjoining door to see what is in there? It's these ridiculous leaps of faith required that if you are not willing? Then they kill the movie for you. The ending also takes some believing, such is the rampant stench of Hollywood of it all. But ultimately it rings hollow at times and quickly runs out of scares in the last third.
Theo Robertson 28 April Someone decides to make a true life story Yeah sure it is horror movie about a haunted house where undead demons live and who for someone unknown reason decide to scare the crap out of a poor put upon family. I wonder how the director will approach the story? No let me guess. Long tracking shot of house with scary music being played in the background?
Camera Pans Towards House. Scary Music Is Heard Wow such a pity lottery jackpot numbers aren't so easy to predict. The chances of ever winning the lottery jackpot are just as likely as anything seen in this story. Did anyone say this was based on true events? Sharp " blink and you'll miss it " editing giving the feeling you're watching a MTV ident , murky cinematography and loud noises giving you the impression you're watching yet another mediocre horror movie that any hack director can make in his sleep.
The visions point towards something but Matt doesn't know as the strain on the Campbell begins to show That's the sum total of The Haunting in Connecticut really. The special effects are good if your very easily spooked out then you may find this more effective than I did. The acting is pretty good, it's just a shame the film isn't.
Nominally based on a true story ghost story about a family that moves into a new home so that one of their children with cancer can be closer to the hospital treating him. They are unaware that the house they moved into was a former funeral home and that it is haunted. Good, and at time great horror film that takes the basic premise and runs with it, adding in all sorts of ghoulies and ghosties and things that go bump in the night. I decided to give the film a go after seeing the Discovery Channel special on the same subject.
A bit unfocused in the telling, the film imagines a great deal of additional material and evil doings, the film seems to lurch about at times as it tries to find its footing to get you to the next scare sequence. Where the film shines is in the scare sequences, some in the present, some in flashback, where the weird happenings and strange sights manage to send some shudders up and down your spine.
Is it a great film? It is however a good, but flawed one thats perfect for curling up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn. I liked it. OK, but not great.
Started well - the mystery and suspense was gradually increased and the plot promised much. However, the director then started to overdo the scares. The story got more confusing and nonsensical, and simply degenerated into scare-a-minute stuff.
I never find Martin Donovan's acting convincing and this movie reinforced that view. Virginia Madsen's performance was good, however. Kyle Gallner did a reasonable job as the haunted kid. In order to be nearer to the hospital a family has to move for their teenage boy suffering from a severe illness.
Their new home is a dream come true, except for the paranormal activity. Nothing like paranormal activity to interrupt a happy home.
The Haunting In Connecticut is a haunted house movie. This mildly unusual turn on events is a sufficiently robust hook on which to hang the customary succession of corner-of-the-eye movements, things glimpsed in mirrors, bad dreams, strange noises, and things to make you jump etc.
So horror movie aficionados can be confident that they will get creepy atmosphere, build up of suspense and menace, and surprise moments. But what I liked very much about this movie was the dynamic within the family which is subjected to these goings on.
All too often the people who move into movie haunted houses are cyphers whose entire existence is pinned to their roles as victims. In this case, there is an unusual back story - the family rents the house, leaving father behind, so that they can be near the hospital which is treating the teenage son for cancer, and the house because of its history is a cheap rental.
This family are good people facing real problems, and this creates a particularly strong investment in them on the part of the viewer - you care for them, and they have enough problems that the last thing they need - or deserve - are the events which begin to unfold in the rental house. Sound design was quite excellent, with much of the creepiness and atmosphere created out of no more than effective surround-sound.
The film is purportedly based on true events ie. While this may have been responsible for the family dynamic which works so well, I do have a great deal of trouble in accepting this tosh as true or anything like true, with particular reference to the ending which, right up to the last minute, I was hoping would be credible until the great Hollywood cop-out took place.
So the film industry wants to make a paranormal horror film based on what happen is what i believe is an insult to the family who endured months of terror.
This my opinion.. How can you write an article with so many WRONG facts, improper grammar, and awful spelling mistakes? If you want to be taken seriously as a writer, go to college, get an education, and please, if you can't do that, at least use spell check. I believe this story is true. Back when I was dating my first husband he lived in Plantsville and there was a story about in the local newspaper about the Snedeckers and the freaky things that were happening to them in the home.
Some of it has been changed for the film but the truth has a certain ring to it. Thry are the worst and proven numerous times to fake stories to make people look like a jackass.
I lived in New Britain, which was the town right next to Southington. We never heard of this story. If the house really was haunted it would have been in the newspapers. I dated a guy who lived in Southington and he never heard anything such story. I never trusted the Warrens, to me they are fake and make up crap to make money. I lived in a 3 family house in New Britain and the grandmother of a gypsy died on the floor we rented.
I had experiences in the house, I bet if I told the Warrens about it they would have tried to sell it. A friend's brother still lives in that house, just a different floor and has things happen some things as well.
As far as the Haunting in Connecticut goes, it's all fake. The son had cancer and that is probably the only truth to the whole story. I hated this movie. The kid had cancer, which is aelardy heart breaking, and he was on a drug trial that had a condition. You start hallucinating and you're out. So of course when he starts seeing ghosts he can't say anything or it's back to chemo. Over all it just made me sad.
Not a flick I would recommend, ever. Regardless of fact or fiction, I do believe that people who share these stories do believe they have experienced them. I don't doubt they become exaggerated during the process but I guarantee that the amount of ridicule someone would cop from this kind of situation would be much greater than any profits made.
I don't think we'll ever really know what happens unless we were there to experience it ourselves but for entertainment purposes you can't deny that it's an interesting story. The movie is ok, the documentary is creepier, but the truth is nothing happened. The kid DID die at 38 from Hodgkins recurring. I think if you was to think about it the movie was OK not nothing close the the discovery version but that's my opion.
Thanks for stopping by Raevyn14 and Nicole. I think the whole thing is very eerie. The documentary was interesting, many of the things that happened to the boy in the movie, actualy happened to the Mother in real life, it was just changed to fit in with the story line I have seen the documentary to this movie, it is more frightening than anything hollywood could produce.
Thank you J. I think the house looks eerie and you can still see the morgue doors at the front of the house. I am not sure how much of the Snedekers story is true.
